Zaporizhzhya National University (ZNU) has been created in 1930. The
educational institution went through the long way of development: an
institute of public education - a pedagogical institute of professional
education - a state pedagogical institute - a state university - a
national university.
The history of Zaporizhzhya National University dates back to a
pedagogical institution founded in Alexandrovsk (the former name of
Zaporizhzhya) at the end of the XIX century. A school was founded in
one of its buildings in 1897. The teaching system was later transformed
into three-year pedagogical courses (1921), and in 1930 an institute of
public education was set up. In 1933 it was reorganised into the state
pedagogical institute. In 1986 the institution has got its present
status of the Classical University.
Zaporizhzhya National University is a higher education institution of
the 4th level of accreditation, an outstanding center of education, a
place of gathering and spreading out of the values of the Ukrainian
culture of the Prudpiprovskyy region, and one of the most well-known
classical universities of Ukraine. There are more than 600 university
staff members, among whom are 72 Professors and Doctors of Science and
343 - Associate Professors, Candidates of Science in the university.
More than 14 thousand of the intra- and extramural students study in
the university. Nowadays ZNU includes such departments, which

University accommodations, technical and material resources are six
studying buildings, a sport center, four dormitories, PC labs with the
Internet access (there are about 600 modern computers in the
university), a
scientific
library, which offers 3 subscription departments and 8 halls
of specialized literature, serves more than 30 thousands readers trough
out a year. It proposes them more than one million modern publications.
As a strategically important scientific center in the region ZNU
maintains scientific research in such priority directions:
- fundamental
research in the most important problems of natural history, social
science and humanities;
- problems of the
demographic politics, human potential development and formation of the
civil society;
- environmental
protection and constant development;
- new biotechnology;
diagnosis and methods of treatment of the mostly spread diseases;
- new computer
devices and technology for the society informatization;
- new technology and
technology of the resources saving in power engineering, industry and
agricultural complex;
- new substances and
materials.
The university staff takes part in organizing and holding of national
and international conferences, and cooperates with scientists from
Ukraine and abroad. For example, exchanges have taken place with USA,
Great Britain, Poland, Russia, Bulgaria, Holland, Austria, France and
Germany.
There are student social club, sport club, student FM radio station
Universe, local TV-network Universe-TV, newspaper Zaporizhzhya
University, press-center, and scientific journals Herald of ZNU and New
Philology in the university.
