There are 783 students at the Faculty of Biology, including 403 full-time students. The faculty staff includes 51 teachers: 8 doctors of science, professors (16%) and 35 candidates of science (69%).

The history of the Faculty of Biology of the Zaporizhzhya State University started in August 14, 1987. The historical basis of the faculty was the Division of the General Biology. The modern structure of the faculty includes 7 divisions:

According to their professional interests the biologists, chemists and ecologists research the problems of the different live organisms and develop the new ways of the maintenance of the biological diversity, rational usage of the natural resources, and health protection in order to make the independent Ukrainian state stronger and increase the level of its economical and cultural progress.

Depending on their side-views and specializations the biologists, chemists and ecologists can work at the different educational institutions, such as the secondary and technical schools (as teachers of the biology and chemistry), the institutions of the higher education and the foundations of the scientific research of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine (NASU).

The professionals also can apply their knowledge and skills working in the chemical industry (at the laboratories of the analysis of the nutritive products, household chemical goods and oil products). They can work at the nutritive industry (at the laboratories specialized on the nutritive products quality analysis at the confectioneries, vodka distilleries, breweries, bread-baking plants and fish-factories), as well as at the different ministries, such as Ministry of the Ecology, Ministry of the Health Protection, Ministry of the Agricultural Politics, the Committee of the Forests Economy and Environmental Protection, at the fishing inspections and diagnostic laboratories.

The graduates of the Faculty of Biology can work at the stations of the plants protection, in the quarantine services, at the laboratories of the products quality control, at the rayons', oblast's and city laboratories of the control of the environmental conditions, in the system of the "green building" (planting of the greenery in the cities, at the industrial and recreational territories and the lands that are being reclamated), in the system of the state bio-monitoring, at the sanitation centers, at the institutions of the scientific research that are working at the problems of the diagnostics, clinical biochemistry and the immunology, and at those institutions that are developing the theoretical and experimental aspects of the biochemistry and immunology in the stages of the phylogenesis and ontogenesis.

They can also work at the public and state hunting organizations, forestries, zoos, biospheric national parks, animal farms and fish-farms.

After getting their Specialist or Master degrees the students of the Faculty of the Biology of ZNU can continue their education at the aspirantura and doctorantura.

The faculty's laboratories of scientific research and special classrooms are equipped with modern devices. The laboratories include all the equipment needed for the faculty staff's and students' scientific researches in many topics, such as: histochemistry; electrical physiology; soil science and ecology; morphology, anatomy and systemization of plants; physiology of plants and genetics; cytology, histology and immunology; biochemistry of the medical plants; biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology and cellular crops; immunology of the cellular populations; applied etymology; ichthyology and fishery, wildlife and animal farming; ecology of the hunting animals; evaluating of the hunting lands quality; the analysis of the hunting activities of the hunting lands users; the technology for the improvement of the modern equipment for the immobilization of the hunting animals, and the advising for the transmigration of the hunting fauna.

The Faculty of Biology is the host institution for the scientific Olympics and the defenses of the scientific research papers of the Youth Academy of Science members (biological department). There are the Museum of Zoology (450m 2), PC lab and the Khortitsa biological station (2700 ì2) at the Faculty.

Students' internships take place at the Azov-Sivash National Natural Park, Sadov Research Institution of Hunting and Forestry (Dzhalurgach Island), Nikitsky Botanical Garden, hunting economies of Ukraine and fish-farm of Grigorivka village. Students of the faculty have the opportunity to go abroad for the probation.

The Faculty of Biology hosts the Museum of Zoology, the Chief of the museum - Oleksandr Mukolayovuch Korotya.

In order to increase the quality of the studying process the faculty invites the specialists who have the practical knowledge. It came to the agreements and signed the contracts with the Board of the Directors of the National Reservation Askania Nova, the hunting organization of the Biryuchij Island, and the Division of the Clinical Medicine of the Institute of the Doctor's Improvement. The major scientist of Ukraine, Germany and Russia also are invited to teach at the faculty. Traditionally, the teaching staff of the faculty goes on probations at the leading professional institutions.

Scientific work

The scientific laboratories for the research work and special classrooms of the Biological Faculty meet all modern standards. Seven scientific schools work at the faculty.

Students participate in the scientific work of the divisions. The Union of the Young Scholars works at the faculty. It does the scientific work in all topics researched by the divisions. Annually the plenty of scientific conferences take place at the faculty. The Faculty of Biology is the host institution for the scientific Olympics and the defenses of the scientific research papers of the Youth Academy of Science members (biological department). The results of the scientific researches can be published at the specialized publications of the Faculty.

Student Life

The educational activities at the faculty are planned and organized in accordance with conception of the university work and all-university work plan. Based on these documents the faculty plans of the educational work and the plans of the work of the academic groups advisors are developed. The main efforts of the teaching staff of the faculty are aimed to the increasing of the advisors activity, the extending of the individual work with students, and establishing of the direct contacts with students' parents. It gives the positive results. As a matter fact, the number of student unexcused absences has been decreased.

Organizational and educational events:

• annual celebration of the Faculty Day, Open Doors Day, Freshmen Day, New Year and other holidays; the exhibition of photos "Nature and We";
• regular publishing of student wall newspapers;
• participation of the students in the scientific and practical conferences and seminars about the current problems of biology and ecology;
• Including the points about the role of the Ukrainian researchers in the science development to the instructors' lectures;
• Encouraging students to participate in the events concerning the control of the environmental conditions and saving the biological diversity;
• Students meeting with veterans of work and WW II
• Participation in the sport competitions of ZNU.

Besides mentioned, the systematical educational events take place at the faculty. They are aimed to the activation of the public and cultural lives of the students, increasing the studying discipline and academic success.

Annually the faculty students participate at the cleaning up the territory and transporting garbage off the Khortitsa Island, park Dybovuy Hay and the railway for children.

In 2004-2005 academic year the students of the Faculty of Biology won at the contest "Student of the Year" (in the nominations "Student-public figure" and "Student-scholar of the year").

Organized by the teaching staff of the faculty the excursions to the Ukrainian reservations and national parks were very valuable. There were excursions to the Sofiivs'kyy dendropark in Uman (2003), Dendroprk in Alexandria city (2003), the preservation "Tavria" in Novomukolaivs'kyy rajon of Zaporizhzhya oblast (2004). The students could sightseeing other places of Ukraine, such as Bila Tserkva (2003), Kaniv (2003), Novomoskovsk and its monastery (2003), Sevastopol and its "Institute of the Southern Sees" (2003). All these cultural events enriched the students spiritually, and caused the feelings of patriotism in them.

The peculiarity of the specialty "Biology" is its closeness to the live problems of the society as a whole and each person. That is why the teachers pay special attention to the patriotic education of their students during their lectures and laboratory activities. Using the examples from the biology (world of plants and animals) the damaging influence of the smoking, alcoholism and drugs is explained to the students, the notion about the unity and mutual dependence of all the organisms of the biosphere is formed, and the sensitiveness to the nature and the native land is also developing. The educational and field internships are very helpful in this process. During these internships the students go to the wild corners of the nature, botanical gardens, and hunting lands, where they learn about the nature, the plants and animals of The Red Book, and the beauty of the native land. All these form the ecological world outlook and patriotism of the future professionals. Moreover, the series of lectures about the famous people "We are from Ukraine" take place at the faculty.

Their willingness to the scientific researches the students can apply at the different scientific unions of the faculty. There they can learn the main elements of a scientific research, the culture of the scientific work and the ethics of a scientific discussion. The proof of this is the fact that many times the students of the faculty won the first places at the All-Ukrainian Biological Olympics and contests of the scientific papers.

The Council of the Young Scholars works actively at the Faculty of Biology. In September 2005 it organized and supported the International Scientific Conference, which gathered more then 100 participants from Ukraine and neighbor countries. The young scholars also started the long-term project "Ecological Marathon", which was also financially supported by the Oblast State Administration and the Ecological Administration.

In 2006 the concluding scientific and practical conference of the All-Ukrainian contest of the student scientific works (section "Biology") took place at the Faculty.

From March, 29 to April, 1 2007 the International Conference "Modern problems of biology, ecology and chemistry" , which is devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Faculty, will take place at the faculty.

During 20 years of the faculty existence the highly professional teaching staff has been formed, as well as material and technical basis that is good enough for the optimal organizing of the studying and educational processes.

There is a lot of the educational institutions (secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, technical schools and universities), industrial, agricultural and private businesses that are in need of the professional biologists, chemists, ecologists, and specialists in parks and gardens maintenance in Zaporizhzhya region. That is why the faculty staff believes that its main goal is to prepare highly professional specialists that will be able to provide the qualitative level of the work in the educational and scientific institutions, and also in the industrial conditions.
