September 9th journalism students of Zaporizhzhya National University celebrated the Day of Solidarity of Journalists, commemorated with a minute of silence in memory of those killed colleagues who put their lives doing their job and bringing the truth to the people.
We remind that the International Day of Solidarity of Journalists celebrated since 1958 and was based on the 4 Congress of the International Organization of Journalists in memory of the Czechoslovak journalist, writer and anti-fascist Julius Fucik, who during his time in prison has written an outstanding book "Reporting with noose around his neck". As conceived by the Congress of Deputies, on this day of all journalists and media should show the world its unity, especially in the protection of their rights.
It should be noted that since 2014 has been credited with 6 deaths of journalists in carrying out their duties, as well as 257 cases of assault and beating of journalists and 114 cases of threats to their careers. Many journalists died in Ukraine during the recent events at the Independence Square (Kyiv) and the counter-terrorist operation in Donetsk and Luhansk. So, this year's International Day of Solidarity of Journalists is particularly important masters of the pen, which put a lot of effort fighting right to freedom of speech in Ukraine, and protecting the right of every citizen to objective and accurate information.
