The Faculty of Foreign Languages of Zaporizhzhya National University was visited by Professor of the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Anthropology at the University of the Basque Country (Bilbao, Spain), Koldo Garai.
It should be mentioned that the first Professor’s visit of the faculty was in the summer 2016. Then Koldo Garai told the students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages about the culture and traditions of the Basque Country, and also discussed with the teachers of the faculty the prospects of the study of corpus linguistics.
This time during December, Professor Garai organized scientific-practical seminars for students and teachers of the faculty in English, Spanish and French. The main purpose of the seminars was to acquaint the audience with such concept in modern linguistics as «corpus», its types and advantages of using such a «tool» in modern studies. In addition, Professor presented several computer programs created on the basis of «Corpus» that could facilitate the process of translation from one language to another.
It should be noted that the seminars were held in specialized computer classroom, so that the lectures were interactive and dynamic: the students had the opportunity to do certain exercises, to translate text in the above-mentioned programs following professor’s instructions.
Students appreciated that experience and noted that classes were held at the proper level. So, they emphasized that the seminar was very interesting and useful. The information which was provided can be used for further researches. For many students the topic was new, but due to well-presented material, it was comprehensible.
During his stay at Zaporizhzhya National University Koldo Garai also attended Spanish classes as first or second foreign language, shared experiences of his own researches, communicated with students and teachers of the faculty.
It is worth noting that the Professor pointed out the outstanding creativity and potential of students, their interest and motivation to studies, as well as the professionalism of the teaching staff of the faculty.
