From 13 to 17 May, representatives of the Faculty of Journalism of ZNU took part in a large-scale conference of the DESTIN project of the European Union Erasmus + program. For five days at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, participants in a consortium of 20 partner universities in Ukraine and Europe (Great Britain, Austria, Ireland, Poland and Sweden) discussed the key points of the project. The dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Viktor Kostiuk, the head of the Journalism Department, Yuliia Liubchenko, and Kateryna Sirinok-Dolharova, Deputy Dean for International Affairs joined the discussion.

During the time that the project will be implemented, the educational programs, curricula and content of undergraduate and graduate programs in journalism will be updated. The project involved European experts who conducted training for Ukrainian partners on program description, evaluation criteria and learning outcomes. It is worth noting that the European requirements and standards are significantly different from the Ukrainian ones, therefore, they are innovative for domestic universities. In particular, European colleagues explained what modular descriptors are and the ratio of components in the structure of disciplines: program goals, learning outcomes and student-centered approaches to teaching. The launch of the updated programs is planned for September 2020.

Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Viktor Kostiuk commented on the participation of ZNU in this program: “We have a very important task to accomplish in time and effectively the project implementation plan.  In the near future, the Faculty of Journalism will begin to actively work on updating programs in accordance with European criteria.  We will conduct trainings for our professors, interview students, graduates and employers to find out their needs regarding educational services.”

It should be remembered that the project DESTIN Erasmus + KA2 (“Journalism education for democracy in Ukraine: Developing Standards, Integrity and Professionalism”) is aimed at systemic changes in Ukrainian journalistic education. The project coordinator is Bath Spa University (UK). The project will last until 2021.
