The main areas of scientific work are:
- Problems of concepts and cognitive linguistics (associate professor Fedorenko L.V.)
- Linguocultural concepts of the German language (the head of the department, associate professor Vapirov S.Yu., senior lecturer Khaydukova)
- Problems of the discourse of different genres (senior lecturer Shapochkina N.V., associate professor Zakharova N.V.)
- Territorially and socially marked variants of the German language (the head of the department, associate professor Vapirov S.Yu., lecturer Rikhter O.O.)
- Problems of linguo-stylistics and linguo-poetics of German art works (associate professor Fedorenko L.V., lecturer Rikhter O.O.)
- Problems of literature analysis of the art literary works (associate professors Botner V.S., Kravchenko Ya.P., Nikolova O.O.)
- Complex sentences in cognitive and communicative aspects: coordinating-subordinate polynoms (associate professor Yatsenko P.I.)
- Aspects of translation studies (Vapirov S.Yu., Velyka O.I., Prokhorov V.F., Fedorenko L.V.)
The staff of the department is concentrated on permanent improving of quality of the foreign language teaching as well as in students’ motivation to conduct scientific research. Since 2006 the scientific seminars for undergraduates titled “The Christmas readings” have been held in the department. Besides, “The Literary Workshop” headed by the associate professors V.S. Botner, Ya.P. Kravchenko, O.O. Nikolova and O.V. Tupakhina is held. In February 2010 a student theatre studio “Indigo” was created and organized by N.V. Zakharova.
The department takes active part in organizing methodological seminars for school teachers from Zaporizhzhia and the Zaporizhzhia region, where the staff introduces the latest tendencies and methodologies of the German language teaching.
Since 2004 the Center of the German language studying, where representatives of the department deliver their lectures, has been operating on the basis of the department (the partner is Goethe-Institut, Kyiv). The staff of the department regularly participates (at least 2 times a term) in coordinating meetings and theme seminars conducted by Goethe-Institut. Once a year, the staff of the Center has an opportunity to take a train course in Germany. Permanent contacts with German Academic Service of the Exchange (DAAD) are maintained.
